Today, deaths due to cardiovascular diseases take place near the top. The operations in majority of the cardiovascular diseases are conducted with the heart-lung pump. This pump system is used to send blood to all the tissues via synthetic lines after heart and lungs are deactivated during the heart operation, and thus the patient can survive. Also, devices supportive of heart and lungs in the patients whose heart and lung functions are disrupted before and after the operation are used. With the use of these devices, the patients can return to life or keep their chance of living through preparation for the heart transplant. Therefore, the preparation and use of heart-lung pump and supportive tools and the continuation of the function are very important for the patient’s life.
The purpose of the Program of Perfusion Techniques is to train health technicians who can use the heart-lung machine for the cardiac operations under the supervision of a specialist doctor like cardiovascular surgeon or anaesthetist, the heart-lung supportive devices for the respiratory and circulatory insufficiency and the dialysis devices for the renal failure, and who can prepare, run and follow the haemo-diafiltration and auto transfusion devices. Perfusion technicians should have information on operation room and anaesthesia services management as well as field information; they should also build an effective communication with the patients, patients’ relatives and other health personnel.
The graduates of the Program of Perfusion Techniques are entitled as ‘perfusion technician’. Perfusion technicians can find a chance for employment at public and private hospitals. The graduates can get a chance to complete the undergraduate programs by succeeding in the external transfer exam of OSYM.
The duration of the Program of Perfusion Techniques is two years. The students take such courses of general culture as Turkish Language, Foreign Language, Atatürk’s Principles and History of Reforms; they also take such theoretical courses as Anatomy, Physiology, Haematology, Surgical Diseases, Perfusion Practices, Extracorporeal Circuits, Cardiac Diseases and Cardiovascular Surgery, Basic and Advanced Support Practices, Occupational English and Medical Terminology. Besides these courses, practical training is stressed and projects and internships are encouraged.
